Submit Your Website In Norton Safe Web

Site owners: Let's Start

If you are a Web site owner, Norton Safe Web can work with you to provide a safe environment for Internet users. The site report is a great resource to help you identify and resolve security issues for users of your Web site. Our expert analysis may find security issues with your Web site that you were not aware of. You may also learn more about the experiences of your site's visitors by reading the community site reviews.

Getting started with Norton Safe Web

To submit your site for rating, re-evaluation, or to appeal the rating of your site, you need to create a Norton Safe Web account and verify the ownership of your site. Follow these steps:
  1. Signup for an account with Norton Safe Web if you haven't already done so.
  2. On the "site dispute" tab of your profile page, click the "Add site" link and enter your Web site address. (Check out the Web site registration tips for more information.)
  3. You will receive an email on successful registration of your Web site. Please follow the instructions in the email carefully. Alternatively the site verification instructions will also be displayed on the "site dispute" page.
  4. Once you have completed the site verification steps, click "Verify Now" (next to your Web site name) to establish ownership. You need to have your site ownership verified in order to submit your site to be rated. Please visit the Web site ownership verification tips for more information about this process.
How to get your site rated

Please note that your site needs to be registered and site ownership verified to get the site rated. See Getting started with Norton Safe Web for more information.
If your site is currently untested by Norton Safe Web a gray icon appears on the site report page. To submit your site for rating:
  1. Sign in to your Norton Safe Web account.
  2. On the Site Dispute page, click "Rate my site" next to the site name. Note that the initial evaluation process takes about two weeks to complete.
What is Norton Secured Seal? How do I get this rating?

A Norton Secured Seal is shown to users of Norton Security, Norton Identity Safe and Norton Safe Search in their search results pages. Sites that display Norton Secured Seal use Symantec SSL or the Symantec Trust Seal which indicates that their business has been validated as a legal business entity and the web site uses recommended security practices including best-of-breed SSL Certificates and daily web site malware scanning. To find out more about Symantec SSL and Symantec Trust Seal.

Do you think your Web site's rating is inaccurate?

Please note that your site needs to be registered and site ownership verified to get the site re-evaluated. See Getting started with Norton Safe Web for more information.
If you feel that your Web site has been given a rating by Norton Safe Web that is inaccurate, you can easily request a re-evaluation following these steps:
  1. Sign in to your Norton Safe Web account.
  2. On the "site dispute" tab, click the "Re-evaluate my site" link next to your Web site name. You can raise your concerns and issues regarding content on your Web site here.
The "site dispute" tab lists any threats detected on your site. You must remove these threats from your site.
We process re-evaluation requests in the order in which they are received. As soon as our re-evaluation is complete, we will send you a notification. You can revisit the Norton Safe Web Site report to view the updated rating for your Web site.

Submitting an appeal after your site has been re-evaluated

If you are not satisfied with our re-evaluation of your Web site, you can submit an appeal. You must completely review and remove any security risks on your Web site before submitting an appeal.
Click the "Appeal my re-evaluation results" link next to your Web site name on the "site dispute" tab. On the next page, you will see the threats detected on your site. You should remove these threats if you agree that our detections are accurate. If you think the detections are not accurate, please indicate why you think so. Note that it is helpful to provide as much detail as possible to help your appeal.

We will send you a notification on receipt of your appeal request. We review the appeals in the order in which they were received and will send you a notification on completion. You can revisit the Norton Safe Web Site report to view the updated rating for your Web site. You can view all your Web site ratings and re-evaluation request status on the "site dispute" tab of your profile page.

Also, please keep in mind that the opinions of the people who write reviews on our Web site do not reflect the views of Symantec; we cannot filter reviews out. If you have a problem with something that someone writes in a review, perhaps you should leave a review addressing any misconceptions that visitors to your site may have.

If your Web site has had repeated problems that have caused us to give it an unfavorable rating, we may refuse or postpone a request for reanalysis of that site.

Web site registration tips

To register your Web site, go to Safe Web at http://safeweb.norton.com and signup for an account, if you haven't already done so. Then sign in to your account and go to "my profile". Choose the "site dispute" tab and use the "Add site" link to submit your site name. When registering a Web site, to your profile make sure you:
  • First select the protocol (http or https) of your Web site from the drop down and
  • Then type your Web site address (Eg: www.symantec.com) or URL, without the protocol (http or https), in the text box.
Add site popup Any typographical errors will prevent successful completion of the Web site registration process, so please be accurate when entering the information.
When you successfully register the site, you will receive an email explaining two methods for ownership verification.

Web site ownership verification tips

After your Web site is registered, it needs to be submitted for ownership verification. When you register the site, you will receive an email explaining two methods for ownership verification. There are also instructions on the "site dispute" page of your profile.

To start the verification process, click on "Verify your site".

Verify your site You can check the site name you entered is correct by clicking on the site name link next to "Verifying site". If you're unable to access your site through this link, double check the spelling and/or the protocol entered, and make corrections as needed.

Then select one of the two site verification methods: meta tag or upload an HTML file.

  1. When using the first method, to add a meta tag into your Web site's home page, please be aware of the following placement and content issues.

Meta Tag Placement The <meta> tag must be placed in the <head> section, before the first <body> section.

    For example:
    <head>
    <title>Title text</title>
    <meta name="norton-safeweb-site-verification" > </head>
    <body>
    . . .
    </body>

Meta Tag Content The authentication code string must exactly match the generated string. Be careful when copying or inserting the string so that no extra characters are inserted, including spaces or formatting characters. Depending on your editing tool, it may enter special formatting information, so be sure to view your source and check the data after the copy/insert to make sure that it still exactly matches the original information. Also be sure that no spaces are entered before, after, or in-between the beginning and ending quotes for the content information.

    For example:
<meta name="norton-safeweb-site-verification" content="actual_string_content_with_no_spaces_or_line_feed_or_formatting_characters"/> Note that some template-based / quick design site-building programs may allow the creation of custom meta tags through a user interface or "wizard" tool. When using your meta tag wizard, do not use the HTML code characters such as </>/". These will be inserted automatically by your program.
To create a custom meta tag:
    1. Open your meta tag creator tool.
    2. For the meta tag name enter exactly: norton-safeweb-site-verification
    3. For content, copy and paste only your 128-character authentication code. (Be sure there are no line breaks or spaces in the code.)
    4. Save the new meta tag to your home page and then upload or publish the page.
If you are unable to place a new meta tag in your Web site home page, add the authentication code string to your list of keywords. For example:
<meta name="keywords" content="keyword1, keyword2, nsw-actual_string_content_with_no_spaces_or_line_feed_or_formatting_characters"/> Once you have added the meta tag in your homepage, click on the orange "Verify Now" button.
    Verify Button
  2. The second verification method requires that you add an HTML authentication file at the root folder of your Web site. When you select the verification method "Upload an HTML file", click the link to download the authentication file.
Auth file download link Once you click on the link, you will be presented with a new window indicating a file download (note, this window may look different depending on what browser you're using). "Save" the file to a convenient location on your computer.
Auth file save dialog Using your site building program, upload / copy the saved HTML file to your Root Directory of your website.
    Root folder screenshot
(Please note the nortonsw file is not within a sub-folder)
Once you confirm the upload is successful, click on the orange "Verify Now" button
    Verify Button
If you have correctly completed the site verification process, you should see "ownership verified" in the status column next to your site name on the site dispute page.
Once your Web site ownership verification is complete, you may remove the HTML file from the root folder or remove the authentication code you entered in the meta tags. Before removal, please ensure you can see the ownership verified status in the "site dispute" tab in your Safe Web account.
Verification steps for google sites
If you host your Web site on Google sites, follow these steps to complete the site verification:
  1. Go to your Google sites homepage.
  2. Click on "More actions" button on the top right.
  3. Click "Manage site" in the drop down menu.
