null

null

null

After Maggi, Dettol soap sample slips on quality

Lucknow   Last Updated: June 19, 2015

After Maggi noodles a product of another multi-national brand has now failed laboratory test.
A sample of Dettol soap, a brand owned by Reckitt Benckiser (India) Limited has failed laboratory tests. Along with dettol soap, 10 other medicines have failed laboratory tests and a notice will soon be sent to them.

According to reports, the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) had collected samples from Agra in November last year and subsequently sent them for laboratory tests in Lucknow. The report was sent to the FDA and Dettol and 10 other medicines failed the tests and were also declared sub standard.
According to reports, the FDA collected a total of 11 samples of some medicines, tinctures and Dettol soap and all of them were found sub standard.

"The wrapper of the By Rajat Rai in Lucknow sample of Dettol soap collected by us mentioned its weight to be 125gm. However, the actual weight in our tests was 117.0470gms. Besides, it was bought from the shop of one Santosh Kumar Valmiki who was found to be running the shop without a licence," said Agra drug inspector RC Yadav.

The sample of the soap was found to be sub-standard and also failed our standard laboratory tests.

Ramadan: a guide to the Islamic holy month

18 June 2015

The ninth month of the Islamic calendar is when Muslims fast during daylight and when the Qur’an is said to have been revealed to the prophet Muhammad
A girl arranges plates before iftar
A girl arranges plates before iftar – the breaking-fast meal– during Ramadan at the Grand Mosque in Delhi,
Muslims around the world are preparing for the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. From waking up in the early hours for a quick bite and sip of water, to the waiting – date in hand – for the seconds to tick by until the call to prayer at sunset, why do Muslims fast and what is Ramadan?

What is Ramadan?

Muslims – there are 1.6 billion in the world – believe Ramadan is the holiest month in the year , when the Qur’an, the holy book of Islam, was revealed to the prophet Muhammad.
Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, or the Hijri calendar based on the lunar cycle, which began in AD622 when Muhammad migrated from Mecca to Medina.

When is Ramadan?

Depending on the sighting of the crescent moon, or hilal, the month begins this year on the evening of the Wednesday 17 June, which means Muslims will begin their first day of fasting at dawn on Thursday 18 June.
The month of fasting will end on either Friday 17 July or Saturday 18 July, as there are either 29 or 30 days in a lunar month.
As Ramadan begins about 11 days earlier each year, it sometimes falls in winter months when the fasts are short, and in summer months when the fasts are long.

Why do Muslims fast?

During this month, observant Muslims do not eat or drink during daylight hours. This is because fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam. The other acts of worship are the shahadah, which is the declaration of faith; salat, the five daily prayers; zakat, or almsgiving; and the hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca.
Fasting in Ramadan is obligatory for Muslims, and in the Qur’an it states:
O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may attain Taqwa [God-consciousness]. – The Qur’an, Al-Baqarah:183
You can hear the recitation of this verse in Arabic:
Fasting, or sawm in Arabic, literally means “to refrain” – and not only is it abstaining from food, drink and sex, but also actions such as smoking cigarettes, talking about others behind their backs, or using foul language.
Fasting does not mean Muslims retreat from their daily routine, rather they are encouraged to continue as normal in their work and usual activities. In fact, this is where the challenge of patience and endurance comes in. Muslims believe fasting is not merely a physical ritual, but is primarily a time for reflection and spiritual recharging.
During the fast, Muslims believe that their desires are curbed and that they can gain understanding of how those who are less privileged than them feel. It is considered to increase one’s patience, closeness to God and generosity towards others.
The month is also a time of community; it is the custom for Muslims to invite their neighbours and friends to share their evening meal – iftar – and recite special Tarawih prayers in congregation. It is also a time when Muslims try to reconnect with the Qur’an, which they believe is the word of God.

Who fasts?

Healthy Muslim men and women are required to fast during the month according to Islamic teachings.

Who is exempt from fasting?

Children, people who are sick or who have mental illness, elderly people, travellers and women who are menstruating , postnatal , pregnant or breast-feeding do not have to fast.
People exempt from fasting during Ramadan can make up the missed fasts later. But if a person is not able to fast at all – particularly if that is for health reasons – can compensate by feeding a needy person for each day they do not fast.

Is it healthy?

Muslims do not fast continuously throughout the month: they eat before dawn and break their fast at sunset each day.
Scientists have found that short periods of fasting – if properly controlled – can have a number of health benefits, as well as potentially helping overweight people.
Health advice from the NHS includes keeping hydrated and having the right proportion of carbohydrates, fat and protein in between fasts, and not bingeing on oily feasts – however tempting. This may, in fact, lead to gaining weight.
During fasting, the body uses up glucose and then starts to burn fat, which can lead to weight loss. So with prolonged fasting of many days or weeks, the body starts using protein for energy.
After a few days of the fast, higher levels of endorphins – hormones related to mood – appear in the blood and can make a person more alert and give an overall feeling of general mental wellbeing, according to the NHS website.
Dr Razeen Mahroof, an anaesthetist from Oxford, said in a statement about fasting to the NHS: “A detoxification process also occurs, because any toxins stored in the body’s fat are dissolved and removed from the body.”
The Muslim call to prayer

Some traditions

Muslims have varying Ramadan customs across the world, depending on their culture. Islamic traditions include:
  • Eating and drinking at sahoor, the pre-fast meal, just before dawn
  • Not delaying breaking the fast at sunset, which is iftar time
  • Breaking the fast with an odd number of fresh dates, or dried dates if none are available, or a few sips of water
  • Searching for the “Night of Power” or Laylat al-Qadr. According to Islamic tradition, this is when the first verses of the Qur’an were revealed to the prophet Muhammad by God. This falls within the last 10 nights of Ramadan.

Why do Muslims start Ramadan on different days?

Muslims often joke that they start fasting on different days. The most likely reason for differences over the start and end dates of Ramadan, from one country to another, is variations in the sighting of the moon.
In places where it is not possible to see the crescent moon, Muslims may begin fasting according to the closest place where the moon has been sighted, while other scholars rely on the calculations of astronomers.
However, some Islamic scholars have called for Muslims to be united in fasting, and to start the month of fasting based on the sighting of the moon in the holy city of Mecca.
As Muslims across the globe have no institutionalised leadership, there is no single edict on which approach should be followed.

How do Muslims fast in places with no sunset?

It’s a good question. How does a Muslim in Juneau, Alaska, fast? The sun remains visible at midnight in the Arctic Circle, and in northernmost Finland, it does not set at all for 60 days during summer.
As a result, local scholars have said it is permissible to follow more reasonable dawn and sunset times of another country. The Islamic Centre of Northern Norway, issued a fatwa – a ruling by a scholar of Islamic law or Muslim judicial authority – that gives local Muslims the option of following the fasting hours of Mecca, when the fasting day in Norway exceeds 20 hours.
The Assembly of Muslim Jurists of America made a similar ruling that Muslims living in the most northerly regions of Alaska can use the dawn and sunset times of another part of the country where “day is distinguishable from night”.

Where is the longest fast in the world?

In Reykjavik, Iceland, the fast will be about 21 hours 57 minutes long in the beginning of the month, with a fast starting at 2:03am and finishing at midnight.

Where is the shortest fast in the world?

In Sydney, Australia, a fasting day will be about 11 hours 24 minutes long at the start of Ramadan, when a fast starts at 5.29am and finishes at 16:53pm.

What happens at the end?

Muslims worldwide celebrate Eid al-Fitr, the festival of breaking of the fast, which marks the end of Ramadan. According to tradition the angels call it the day of prizegiving because all those who fasted are rewarded by God on this day, and so it is common to hear Muslims greet each other with Eid Mubārak (Happy Eid). It falls on the first day of the new Islamic month of Shawwal and it is forbidden to fast on this day.
It is Islamic custom to celebrate Eid with a small sweet breakfast, and to give charity before Eid prayers in congregation. Many Muslims celebrate by giving gifts, wearing new or clean clothes, and visiting friends and family.
In Malaysia it is called Hari Raya Aidilfitri, in Urdu it is Choṭī ʿĪd meaning smaller Eid, while in Turkey it is Şeker Bayramı or sugar feast.

Do people of other faiths fast?

Jews fast for about 25 hours on Yom Kippur, or the Day of Atonement, to ask for God’s forgiveness. Orthodox Christians can spend up to half a year in various forms of fasting, which they believe brings them closer to God.
This article was amended on 18 June 2015. References to “sunrise” in an earlier version have been changed to “dawn”, to clarify that fasting during Ramadan begins at dawn (the beginning of the twilight before sunrise) and not at sunrise (when the sun appears above the horizon).

Samsung Galaxy Phones Vulnerable to Keyboard Bug... www.kosullaindia.com

Samsung Galaxy Phones Vulnerable to Keyboard Bug

Samsung Galaxy S6
More than 600 million Samsung devices are vulnerable to a bug housed within the built-in keyboard, according to a security firm.
The Swift keyboard built into some of Samsung's latest phones allows an attacker to remotely execute code, according to NowSecure, which uncovered and reported the bug late last year.
"The attack vector for this vulnerability requires an attacker capable of modifying upstream traffic," NowSecure said in a Tuesday blog post. "The vulnerability is triggered automatically (no human interaction) on reboot as well as randomly when the application decides to update."

According to the Wall Street Journal, Samsung sent a fix to wireless carriers in March. But three months later, when NowSecure tested two new Galaxy S6 handsets from Verizon and Sprint, the vulnerability was still there.

"Samsung takes emerging security threats very seriously," a company spokeswoman told PCMag in a statement. "We are aware of the recent issue reported by several media outlets and are committed to providing the latest in mobile security."

"Samsung Knox has the capability to update the security policy of the phones, over-the-air, to invalidate any potential vulnerabilities caused by this issue," she continued. "The security policy updates will begin rolling out in a few days. [W]e are also working with Swiftkey to address potential risks going forward."
Verizon did not immediately respond to PCMag's request for comment. Sprint declined to comment.
Swift, meanwhile, said the bug does not affect the SwiftKey apps on Google Play or the iTunes App Store.
"We supply Samsung with the core technology that powers the word predictions in their keyboard," Swift said in a blog post. "It appears that the way this technology was integrated on Samsung devices introduced the security vulnerability."

The company said it only learned of the flaw on Tuesday, via the Journal article, and claims it "is not easy to exploit." A user must be connected to a compromised network, and access is possible only if the user's keyboard is conducting a language update.
If used, however, the flaw allows an attacker to remotely execute code as a system user. In other words, a hacker could access your phone's GPS, camera, and microphone, secretly install malicious apps, eavesdrop on messages or voice calls, and access personal data like pictures and texts.

The bug can be found in the Galaxy S4, S4 mini, S5, and new flagship Galaxy S6. NowSecure has a "patch status" list of phones that have and have not received a fix from their carrier.
"We are aware of a possible security risk associated with the keyboard technology on Samsung devices and are actively partnering with Samsung to address any potential impact to our customers as quickly as possible," a T-Mobile spokeswoman told PCMag.

AT&T did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The keyboard app cannot be uninstalled. If you're concerned, NowSecure suggested avoiding insecure Wi-Fi networks, using a different phone, or contacting carriers for patch information.
According to the Journal, NowSecure CEO Andrew Hoog does not know of any incidents where hackers have exploited the flaw.

Emergency Advani :

null

null

Nato - Russia - Vladimir Putin : Nato shows its teeth to Russia with elaborate Baltic training exercise

Nato - Russia - Vladimir Putin

Nato shows its teeth to Russia with elaborate Baltic training exercise

Dozens of Nato landing craft churned through the Baltic’s grey waters. Further out at sea, huge warships – the US’s San Antonio, Britain’s Ocean and Poland’s Lublin – filled the horizon. On the beach, DVs – short for distinguished visitors – including the UK defence secretary, Michael Fallon, were watching.
The landing craft, especially the mega hovercraft of the Americans, were monstrous, on a scale that would have awed D-day veterans. Eurofighter Typhoons flew overhead. Marines raced out to disappear into the woods. A reminder that even the most carefully planned operations can go wrong came when a Polish transport vessel sank, ignominiously, about 100ft from shore.

The mock landing at Ustka, Poland, on Wednesday was the climax of a two-week Nato exercise called Baltops. Forty-nine naval vessels from 17 countries and 5,900 personnel were involved in this major show of strength.

A soldier attends a massive amphibious landing of Nato troops off the coast of Ustka, northern Poland.
A soldier attends a massive amphibious landing of Nato troops off the coast of Ustka, northern Poland.
It was a dangerous game. One of Russia’s most important naval bases, Kaliningrad, is just over 100 miles to the east, and the Kremlin may view such exercises as a provocation at a time of heightened tension over the Ukraine crisis.
Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, this week announced plans to buy 40 intercontinental ballistic missiles this year. The US, two years after pulling all its armour out of Europe, is preparing to send 250 tanks, armoured vehicles and artillery to bases in eastern Europe.
On Wednesday journalists from around the world were invited to witness Natio’s elaborate exercise in the Baltic. The US-led alliance wants to show that it is doing something, that it is not feeble in the confrontation with Putin. Fallon, when asked about Baltops, said: “It is absolutely not a game.” Asked whether it was provocative to be conducting such exercises so close to Russia, he told the Guardian: “It is not Nato threatening Russia. This is Russia directly trying to intimidate the eastern and northern members of Nato through these flights, through its submarine activity and talk of renewing its ballistic missiles. Nato is not threatening anyone.

“Nato has no quarrel with the Russian people. We do have a quarrel with Putin, or Russia, trying to change borders by force.”
Asked about the danger of a renewed arms race in light of Putin’s pledge on ballistic missiles – though Russia is talking about updating existing missiles rather than adding more – Fallon said: “Russia is clearly modernising its nuclear defence as well as its conventional arms. Nato likewise is committed to increasing defence spending and increasing the percentage of defence spending that goes on new equipment. Nato is ready to match this kind of sabre-rattling from Russia.”

In recent days, Russian planes have been buzzing low over Nato ships, one just 500ft above the destroyer USS Jason Dunham, according to the US defence department. On Wednesday, Eurofighter Typhoons based in Estonia intercepted Russian military aircraft, bringing to 11 the number of interventions since they were deployed six weeks ago. Five of these have been in the last 10 days, coinciding with Baltops.
A US naval officer reported that Russian ships, too, had come “uncomfortably close” – less than a mile from the Nato flotilla. It is in international waters and the Russians have as much right as Nato to be there.

Lt Gen Ben Hodges, commander of the US army Europe, briefing journalists in London this week, said: “I am sure the Russians have no desire to go into a head-to-head fight with Nato. But what is a little worrisome is the airspace violations, without transponders, the big exercises right on the border. All of these things heighten the chance and risk of an accident or something unintended happening.”The response of Nato to the crisis in Ukraine has been feeble: there is no desire on the part of the US to go to war with Russia over a country that is not even a Nato member.

But it wants to send a clear message to Russia that the Baltic states are Nato members and they will be defended. The increased frequency and size of Nato exercises in the Baltic are meant to send that message and Kaliningrad, Russia’s gateway to the west, is a good place to make the point.
During the cold war, Kaliningrad was regularly described as the most militarised place on Earth. Afterwards, that started to change, but against the present crisis it has regained some of its former prominence, with about 50 vessels, almost the same number as those in the Nato exercise, stationed there. The US and the UK devote much of their intelligence capability to monitoring vessels going in and out.

Hodges said: “One of the things that concerns me is the amount of capability that the Russians have put into Kaliningrad. They have the ability to deny access up into the Baltic Sea through anti-ship missiles. They recently did an exercise where they put in an Iskander missile there. That is a range of 300km, a nuclear-capable system which could easily range Riga.”

The importance of Kaliningrad to Russia is that Russian ships from St Petersburg would be vulnerable passing between Estonia and Finland: Kaliningrad has no such vulnerability.

Scandinavian and Baltic countries have reported an increase in Russian naval activity close to their waters, especially involving submarines. The Kremlin has responded by pointing to similar tests of its airspace by Nato planes, and exercises such as Baltops.
Nato may say it is ready to match the Kremlin’s sabre-rattling, but reality is different from the rhetoric. The US is cutting back on defence spending and the size of its forces. A Jane’s report this week said Russia, suffering an economic downturn due partly to sanctions from the US and European nations, is scaling back plans for big rises in defence spending next year, but there will still be an increase. Even with that, Russia’s defence spending is dwarfed by that of the US, which is about 10 times bigger.

Bristish defence secretary Michael Fallon watches the training exercise from the beach.

Igor Sutyagin, a Russian military specialist at London’s Royal United Services Institute, said the standoff in the Baltics is complicated, with both sides using exercises to send messages. “For Nato, the message is: ‘We will defend the Baltic states, don’t mess with us, we will defend our interests, we mean business,’” he said. “The messages have become more confrontational.
“Nato has made a mistake lagging behind Russian moves. To recapture the initiative, it has to be more aggressive. That is why it is confrontational. It is that Nato recognises that it is necessary to regain dominance and that means being more aggressive than its opponent. It is dangerous.”

One of the contentious issues between Nato and Russia is a pact not to have permanent bases in eastern Europe. Nato has tried to get around this by stationing “rotational” troops in the Baltic states and Poland. They are there all-year round but Nato claims they are not permanent. Russia views this as semantics.
“Russia would be left with no other option but to boost its troops and forces on the western flank,” said Gen Yuri Yakubov, responding to US plans for increased troops and equipment in eastern Europe. Among Russia’s options, Yabukov said, would be to deploy its new Iskander missiles in Kaliningrad.

Maggi noodles are hugely popular in India

Nestle says it will destroy more than $50m (£32m) worth of its hugely popular Maggi noodles, following a ban imposed by India's food safety regulator.

India's food safety regulator says tests have found the instant noodles "unsafe and hazardous" and has accused Nestle of failing to comply with food safety laws.
The company insists that the noodles are safe and is challenging the ban.
Nestle has 80% of India's instant noodles market.

The company said in a statement that the value of withdrawn noodles include stocks taken off the shelves and stocks stored in factories and with distributors.

"There will be additional costs to take into account, for example bringing stock from the market, transporting the stock to the destruction points, destruction cost etc. The final figure will have to be confirmed at a later date," Nestle said.

Earlier this month, Nestle began withdrawing the Maggi brand from stores, after regulators said they found higher-than-allowed levels of lead in some packets.
The company is challenging the ban in the high court in the city of Mumbai and "raised issues of interpretation" of India's food safety laws.

Nestle's global chief executive Paul Bulcke has asked to see the results of the laboratory tests and promised to return Maggi to store shelves soon.

Several states have also been testing the noodles for the chemical monosodium glutamate, widely known as MSG.
The instant noodles arrived in India in 1983 and can be found in corner shops across the country.
