Maggi Instant Noodles On Sale As Nestle India Ltd. Face Prospect Of Trial Over Lead Levels
Packets of Maggi 2-Minute Noodles, manufactured by Nestle India Ltd., center, are arranged for a photograph at a general store in Mumbai, India, on Tuesday, June 2, 2015.

The snack had been temporarily banned in New Delhi and certain other parts of the country

Nestlé took its immensely popular instant-noodle brand Maggi off shelves across India on Thursday, amid a controversy over apparent high levels of lead found in the product.
The company said in a statement that although Maggi is completely safe, “recent developments and unfounded concerns about the product have led to an environment of confusion for the consumer,” the BBC reported.
Maggi was also undergoing tests for high levels of monosodium glutamate or MSG, a common but harmful chemical ingredient used as a flavor enhancer in packaged and fast foods worldwide.
The government in New Delhi had earlier issued a 15-day ban on the popular snack — a move several other states subsequently followed, according to the Wall Street Journal. Beyond the South Asian nation’s borders, Singapore also ordered that sales of Maggi imported from India be suspended, the Straits Times reported.
Maggi, known for its tagline that says it can be cooked in “two minutes,” reportedly enjoys an 80% share of India’s instant noodle market and is almost as ubiquitous as the rice and lentils that comprise much of the South Asian nation’s staple diet.
“We have decided to withdraw the product off the shelves, despite the product being safe,” Nestlé added, before promising that everyone’s favorite easy-to-cook meal would be back soon.

Singapore importers told to withhold sales of Maggi instant noodles made in India

Packets of Nestle's Maggi instant noodles are seen on display at a grocery store in Mumbai, India, on June 3, 2015. Singapore importers have been ordered to suspend the sales of Maggi brand instant noodles produced in India, the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) said.

SINGAPORE - Singapore importers have been ordered to suspend the sales of Maggi brand instant noodles produced in India, the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) said on Thursday.
This comes after India banned the sale of the noodles for 15 days after high levels of lead were discovered in batches tested in New Delhi and the state of Uttar Pradesh.
The AVA said "a small amount" of Maggi brand instant noodles from India have been imported into Singapore, but Maggi oat products manufactured there have not been brought in here.
As a precautionary measure, the AVA has taken samples of the instant noodles for food safety tests and advised affected importers to withhold sales until tests are completed.

Nestle takes Maggi noodles off shelves across India

India is the biggest market for Maggi in the world
Nestle India has said it is temporarily taking its bestselling instant noodle brand Maggi off the shelves in India.
It comes amid concerns about safety as several states have been testing the product for higher-than-allowed levels of lead.
They have also been testing for the chemical monosodium glutamate, widely known as MSG.
Nestle said in a statement on Friday that Maggi noodles were completely safe.
But "recent developments and unfounded concerns about the product have led to an environment of confusion for the consumer," it said.
The firm said the confusion had developed to such an extent "that we have decided to withdraw the product off the shelves, despite the product being safe", but promised the noodles would return to the market as soon as the current problem was dealt with.
Maggi noodles had already been banned for 15 days in India's capital Delhi and states including Gujarat. However, other states had deemed them safe.

Analysis: Mumbai

Maggi noodles take two minutes to cook - and - in India - never more than two minutes to find.
They're in every grocery shop - and whether travelling in the backwaters of Kerala, the deserts of Rajasthan, or the northern wilds of Ladakh, you'll find them on the menu at pretty much every roadside cafe.
Maggi have been called "the third staple" alongside rice and lentils - and are one of the country's best known and valuable brands.
So that vast market penetration makes me wonder logistically just how instant this withdrawal is going to be.

The earlier ban of Maggi noodles in Delhi received prominent coverage in the media and on social media platforms.
The ban sparked humour as well as public health concerns on social media platforms like Twitter.
Several hashtags like #Maggi, #Maggiban, #Maggiinasoup, #MaggiKeSideEffects have trended in the past few days.
Some took to Twitter to give their "humorous take" on the ban.

Maggi has an 80% share of India's instant noodle market and has been branded the third staple alongside rice and lentils.
The instant noodles arrived in India in 1983 and can be found in corner shops across the country.
Nestle's relationship with India dates back to 1912, when it launched in the country as The Nestle Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company (Export).

Ajinomoto Co Inc, whose name is synonymous with flavor enhancer monosodium glutamate (MSG), is setting up manufacturing base in India.
The Japanese multinational has applied for licence to produce the controversial MSG, which is at the centre of the Maggi controversy.
Ajinomoto has already taken up space in the 1,500-acre industrial park, OneHub, at Kancheepuram, Tamil Nadu, additional chief secretary CV Sankar told .
The company recently briefed Japanese investors about its India strategy.
The application for Industrial Entrepreneur Memorandum has been filled on May 28 for the manufacture of the controversial chemical only, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion data revealed.
Ajinomoto India has so far been importing and supplying MSG under its brand Ajinomoto, inosinate and guanylate, food items and chicken and mutton masala under the brand Hapima.
Inosinate and guanylate are nucleotide seasoning, which is sometimes used in combination with MSG in soups for instant noodles and some processed foods.
The company describes itself as a global manufacturer of seasonings, processed foods, beverages, pharmaceuticals and specialty chemicals, with specialization in a wide-ranging application of amino acid technologies, clocking a turnover of $10.23 billion in 2015.
MSG is a salt of amino acid.
During a recent briefing of Japanese investors, Ajinotomo revealed its entry strategy for India, which spoke of initial focus on the southern market.
The registration of a joint venture company is completed, and preparation for internal production of core products with a new plant and the launch of two new products, mainly in the four states of South India centered on
Tamil Nadu are the key strategy for its "rising star" markets.
Despite the controversy surrounding MSG, Ajinomoto has seen a 70% growth in the product category in 2015 in retail applications like flavour seasonings.
Interestingly, while the country is now debating the ill-effects of MSG on human health, Ajinomoto, which specialises in its production, has been trying for years to establish something quite opposite.
In 2010, it started a trial on overweight women in the US to see "whether adding sodium glutamate to food facilitates the control of appetite and caloric intake, and prevents body weight rebound, following a period of moderate energy restriction and weight loss."
"Regularly including MSG or foods naturally high in glutamate may help people improve quality of food and amount of intake, yet maintain emotional and pleasurable qualities of eating," the company claimed.

More Indian States Ban the Sale of Maggi Noodles

NEW DELHI – At least four more Indian states banned the sale of Nestlé SANESN.VX -0.35%’s instant noodles Thursday after food-safety inspectors in New Delhi said they found dangerously-high amounts of lead in the product.
Food-safety officials in the western state of Gujarat said they were stopping the sales of Nestlé’s Maggi 2-Minute noodles after about half of the 27 noodle packets they tested contained the toxic metal. Officials in the southern state of Tamil Nadu said their tests found nearly twice the permissible amount of lead in some samples of the product. Authorities in the northern state of Jammu and Kashmir also imposed a ban amid growing concerns about the popular snack. They said they were still waiting for the results of their own tests.
Officials in the northern state of Uttarakhand said they were banning the sale of the noodles after their tests detected the presence of monosodium glutamate, which was not listed in the ingredients. While India doesn’t prohibit MSG, it requires manufacturers to label products that have it.
Tamil Nadu said it was halting sales for three months. The other three states said they would conduct more tests in July to decide whether to allow the product back on the market.
Food-safety departments in at least three other states said their tests did not detect lead or MSG. Nestlé’s Indian arm said it had conducted its own tests and found lead content to be within the allowed limits. It said it does not add MSG to its noodles.

“We use raw materials in Maggi noodles which can contain naturally-occurring glutamate,” Nestlé India Ltd. said in a statement.
A Nestlé SA spokeswoman in Switzerland said Thursday that the company was working with Indian authorities to better understand their test results.
“We are sharing our own test results, which show Maggi noodles to be completely safe, explaining our own testing methodologies and trying to understand the discrepancy between their test results and ours,” she said in an email.
Heighted concern over the safety of Nestle noodles across India was triggered after food inspectors in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh filed a criminal complaint last month, alleging they found seven times the permissible level of lead during a routine examination.
Allegations against the company come at a time when Nestlé and other consumer product companies are struggling with weak sales growth in the world’s second-most populous country.
Shares of its Indian arm tumbled to a six-month low Thursday. At least three Indian brokerages advised clients to sell the stocks Thursday, fearing the food-safety scare would erode sales. Analysts say Maggi noodles account for about a fifth of Nestlé’s sales in India.
India’s biggest supermarket chain, Big Bazaar, said it had halted sales of the noodles. Walmart Stores Inc. said Thursday that it had also decided to pull the noodles off the shelves of its 20 wholesale outlets in India.

India’s national food-safety watchdog said it would wait for test results from other states before deciding on a nationwide ban. It expects to receive results from most other states by early next week.
