A Malaysian Airlines passenger plane with 295 aboard was shot down by a surface-to-air missile in Ukraine near the Russian border, according to multiple reports.
The airline, which saw one of its fleet disappear over the Indian Ocean in March, confirmed only that "an incident" had occurred involving the Boeing 777, which was en route to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam.
“Malaysia Airlines has lost contact of MH17 from Amsterdam," read a tweet from the airline. "The last known position was over Ukrainian airspace. More details to follow,” read a tweet from Malaysia Airlines’ account.

Malaysian Defense Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said he has directed the country’s Ministry of Defense to investigate the incident, according to a message on his Twitter account. He said he could not confirm that the plane was shot down.

But multiple reports, including from Russia's Interfax news agency, said the plane was shot down at cruising altitude. Anton Gerashenko, an adviser to Ukraine's Interior Minister told The Associated press that the plane, carrying 280 passengers and 15 crew people onboard, was shot down.

Gerashenko says on his Facebook page the plane was flying at an altitude of 33,000 feet when it was hit Thursday by a missile fired from a Buk launcher. A similar launcher was seen by Associated Press journalists near the eastern Ukrainian town of Snizhne earlier Thursday.

The adviser also told Russian news agency Interfax that all onboard have been killed.
The border area where the plane apparently went down, near the city of Kremenchuk, has been embroiled in the larger dispute between Ukraine and ethnic Russian separatists. Fighting has intensified in recent months in the region. A day before, according to the Ukrainian government, a Russian military plane shot down a Ukrainian fighter jet in Ukrainian airspace.

A Reuters correspondent near the scene reported seeing burning wreckage and bodies strewn across the ground. A Ukrainian Emergency official told the news agency body parts were scattered up to nine miles around the crash site and at least 100 bodies were seen.
Pentagon Spokesman Col. Steve Warren said he was aware of reports of the downed passenger jet in Ukraine,but did not have further information.

A senior White House official said President Obama has been briefed on the incident. Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, said whether it was intentional or accidental it is an "international incident" when a passenger jet is shot down. McCaul said he believed only a military grade weapon could have downed the plane.

The Boeing jets are equipped with twin Rolls-Royce Trent engines, typically cruises at 35,000 feet at speeds up to 639 miles per hour.
On March 8, Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, also a Boeing 777 and carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew on a route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, disappeared somewhere over the ocean. It has not been found.

 A Malaysia Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, has crashed in eastern Ukraine, Russian news agency Interfax reported Thursday.

Malaysia Airlines confirmed that it lost contact with Flight 17 and that the plane's last known position was over Ukrainian airspace, the airline said on Twitter.

The aircraft was "shot down" over Ukraine by "terrorists" operating a Buk surface-to-air missile system, according to the Facebook page of Anton Gerashchenko, adviser to the Ukrainian Interior Ministry. There were 280 passengers killed as well as 15 crew members, Gerashchenko's post reads.

"We do not exclude that the plane was shot down and confirm that the Ukraine Armed Forces did not fire at any targets in the sky," Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said, according to his website.

The jet is a Boeing 777, according to Interfax. The plane reportedly went down near the border between Russia and Ukraine.

"We are aware of reports on MH17. We're gathering more information," Boeing said on Twitter.

"I am shocked by reports that an MH plane crashed. We are launching an immediate investigation," Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said in another tweet.

News of the Malaysian plane comes in the same week that Ukrainian officials said a Russian fighter shot down a Ukrainian military transport plane while the aircraft was in in Ukrainian airspace.

The route the Malaysian plane was on, between Kuala Lumpur and the Netherlands, is a common one, CNN aviation safety consultant Mary Schiavo said Thursday. She said that the plane was flying over a troubled area and that close communication with air traffic controllers would be a key necessity.

In hostile or disputed areas, "any alteration from your course, and you can have a problem," she said.

Tensions have been high between Ukraine and Russia since street protests forced former pro-Moscow President Viktor Yanukovych from power in February. Russia subsequently annexed Ukraine's southeastern Crimea region, and a pro-Russian separatist rebellion has been raging in Ukraine's eastern Luhansk and Donetsk regions..

Ukrainian forces have been struggling to quell the separatist unrest. Ukraine's government has accused Russia of allowing weapons and military equipment, including tanks, to cross the border illegally into the hands of pro-Russian separatists.

The Pentagon said Wednesday that Russia now has 12,000 troops on the border with Ukraine, as well as some heavy weapons. The troop numbers had fallen to about 1,000 previously from a high of an estimated 40,000 forces earlier this year.

On Thursday, CNN reported that Ukrainian officials said a Russian fighter shot down a Ukrainian jet Wednesday as the jet flew in Ukrainian airspace.

Tensions are high over that incident, separate from the breaking news of the Malaysian flight Thursday.

Airline's troubles

On top of that, the report of a downed Malaysian flight marks the second time this year that Malaysia Airlines has faced an incident involving a plane.

On March 8, Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 disappeared. That plane had 239 people on board. Searchers have found no trace of 370 or its passengers, despite extensive search efforts.

Flight 370 probably flew into the southern Indian Ocean on autopilot with an unresponsive crew, Australian authorities said last month.

During the early phase of the search for Flight 370, aircraft and ships scoured vast stretches of the surface of the southern Indian Ocean but found no debris.

Pings initially thought to be from the missing plane's flight recorders led to a concentrated underwater search that turned up nothing.

A new underwater search, farther south, will be broadly in an area where planes and vessels had already looked for debris on the surface of the water. It is expected to begin in August.

For a passenger airliner to suffer a catastrophe in mid-flight is extremely unusual.

To down a modern passenger jet typically either something has to explode on board, or, as looks increasingly likely in this case, it has to be shot down, either from the air or from the ground.
The Ukrainian authorities seem in no doubt as to what has happened.
An adviser to the Ukrainian interior minister, Anton Herashchenko, alleges that the plane was flying at an altitude of some 10,000m (33,000 ft).
He says that it was hit by a missile fired by a Buk launcher.
The Buk, also known by its Nato codename of Sa-11 Gadfly, is a Russian-made, medium-range surface-to-air missile system designed to defend against high-performance aircraft and cruise missiles.

The Sa-11 is a more capable successor to the older Sa-6 system.
Typically, four missiles are carried on board a tracked vehicle which also houses the guidance and tracking radar.
A separate tracked vehicle carries the Snow Drift target acquisition radar.
Sanctions pressure Everything will now depend upon obtaining accurate and verifiable data on the aircraft's last moments and on what brought it down.
If it does turn out that the Boeing 777 was shot down by the separatists - with weaponry supplied by Moscow - then it could significantly alter the terms of the whole debate surrounding the Ukraine crisis.

 

Buk missiles are typically carried on a tracked vehicle

Over the past few days there has been growing concern among Western governments that Russia was stepping up its military support for the separatists in eastern Ukraine.
Nato spokesmen insist that more and more heavy military equipment has moved from Russian stockpiles to the separatists across the border.
In response, the United States has strengthened its economic sanctions against Moscow - it is threatening even stronger action - though the European Union has so far failed to follow Washington's lead.
But if Russia in any way had a hand in this tragedy then the pressure - especially on the Europeans - for much tougher sanctions will only grow.
It will also prompt a renewed push for a diplomatic solution to the crisis.
Moscow clearly does not want the separatists to be swept aside.
But equally Russian President Vladimir Putin seems to have no clear game-plan as to what the end-state should be.

मलेशियाई विमान 'मिसाइल हमले का शिकार' लगभग 300 लोगों की मौत

मलेशिया एयरलाइंस के एक विमान के पूर्वी यूक्रेन में दुर्घटनाग्रस्त होने से लगभग 300 लोगों की मौत हो गई है. ये जगह रूस की सीमा से लगी है.

फ़्लाइट एमएच17 एम्सटर्डम से कुआलालम्पुर जा रही थी. जब विमान का रडार से संपर्क टूटा उस समय वह विमान इस युद्धग्रस्त इलाक़े से गुज़र रहा था.

विमान में 280 यात्री और 15 चालक दल के सदस्य थे.

क्या हुआ?

मलेशिया एयरलाइंस के मुताबिक़ विमान एम्सटर्डम के शिफोल हवाई अड्डे से ग्रीनिच मान समय के मुताबिक़ गुरुवार 17 जुलाई को सुबह सवा दस बजे उड़ा. उसके चार घंटे बाद विमान का संपर्क टूट गया. इसे कुआलालम्पुर अंतरराष्ट्रीय हवाई अड्डे पर जीएमटी के मुताबिक़ रात 10 बजकर 10 मिनट पर पहुँचना था.

जिस समय विमान से संपर्क टूटा उस समय वह रूसी हवाई क्षेत्र में प्रवेश करने वाला था.

उस क्षेत्र में यूक्रेन सरकार और रूस समर्थक विद्रोहियों के बीच सशस्त्र संघर्ष चल रहा है. मगर दोनों ने ही विमान को निशाना बनाने से इनकार किया है.

किसने निशाना बनाया?

यूक्रेन के गृह मंत्री के एक सलाहकार एंटॉन हेराशचेंको ने आरोप लगाया है कि विमान को जिस मिसाइल ने निशाना बनाया वह बक लॉन्चर से छोड़ा गया था. ये लॉन्चर रूस में बनता है जो कि ज़मीन से हवा में मार करने वाली मिसाइल प्रणाली का हिस्सा है.
यूक्रेन का आरोप है कि रूसी सेना विद्रोहियों को आधुनिक मिसाइल मुहैया करा रही है.
मगर अलगाववादी नेता अलेक्ज़ेंडर बोरोडाइ ने यूक्रेन सरकार पर आरोप लगाया है कि उसने विमान को निशाना बनाया.

उन्होंने रूस के सरकारी टीवी चैनल रोसिया 24 को बताया, "ये एक यात्री विमान था, जिसे यूक्रेन की वायु सेना ने मार गिराया."

कैसा विमान था ये?

दुर्घटनाग्रस्त हुआ विमान बोइंग 777-200ईआर विमान था. कुआलालम्पुर से बीजिंग जाते समय मार्च में जो एमएच 370 विमान लापता हो गया था ये विमान भी उसी मॉडल का था.

यूक्रेन जिस बक लॉन्चर की बात कर रहा है, देखिए उसके बारे में क्या है जानकारी-

क्या ये विमान हादसा पासा पलट देगा?

उड़ान के बीच किसी यात्री विमान के साथ हादसा काफ़ी विचित्र बात है.

किसी आधुनिक यात्री जेट के गिरने की वजह या तो उसमें विस्फोट होना हो सकता है या जैसा इस मामले में लगता है कि इसे या तो हवा में या ज़मीन से निशाना बनाया गया होगा.

यूक्रेन के अधिकारियों को इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं कि क्या हुआ होगा.
यूक्रेन के गृहमंत्री के एक सलाहकार एंतोन हेराशेंको का आरोप है कि विमान क़रीब 10 हज़ार मीटर (33 हज़ार फ़ीट) की ऊंचाई पर उड़ रहा था.
वे कहते हैं कि इसे बक लॉन्चर से छोड़ी गई मिसाइल से निशाना बनाया गया.
नैटो की कोड भाषा में एसए-11 गैडफ़्लाई यानी बक मिसाइल सिस्टम रूस निर्मित मध्यम रेंज का ज़मीन से हवा में मार करने वाला मिसाइल सिस्टम है, जिसे ऊंचे दर्जे के एयरक्राफ़्ट और क्रूज़ मिसाइलों से रक्षा के लिए बनाया गया है.
एसए-11 अपने पिछले संस्करण एसए-6 से ज़्यादा उन्नत भी है.

अमूमन इसमें रॉकेट पर चार मिसाइलें होती हैं और दिशा के लिए रडार भी होता है. इसके अलावा एक अन्य रॉकेट पर लक्ष्य बताने वाला स्नो ड्रिफ़्ट रडार मौजूद होता है.

प्रतिबंधों का दबाव

अब सभी कुछ एयरक्राफ़्ट के आख़िरी पलों के सही और प्रामाणिक आंकड़ों और सूचनाओं के हासिल करने पर निर्भर है, जिससे पता चलेगा कि आख़िर वह कैसे गिरा.
अगर यह पता चलता है कि मॉस्को से भेजे गए हथियारों से बोइंग 777 को अलगाववादियों ने गिराया तो इसके बाद यूक्रेन संकट को लेकर चल रही बहस की कहानी ही पूरी तरह बदल सकती है.
पिछले कुछ दिनों में पश्चिमी सरकारों में इस पर काफ़ी चिंता जताई गई है कि रूस पूर्वी यूक्रेन में अलगाववादियों को सैन्य मदद बढ़ा रहा है.
नैटो प्रवक्ता ज़ोर देते हैं कि ज़्यादा से ज़्यादा भारी सैन्य सामान रूस से सीमा पार कर अलगाववादियों को पहुंचाए जा रहे हैं.

जवाब में अमरीका ने मॉस्को पर आर्थिक पाबंदियां कड़ी कर दी हैं- जो काफ़ी कड़ी और ज़्यादा मज़बूत कार्रवाई है.
हालांकि यूरोपीय संघ अभी तक अमरीका के इस क़दम का अनुसरण करने में नाकाम रहा है.
अगर इस हादसे में रूस का किसी भी रूप में हाथ था तो यूरोपीय संघ पर कड़े प्रतिबंध लगाने के लिए दबाव और बढ़ेगा.
इससे इस संकट के कूटनीतिक हल के लिए नए सिरे से तेज़ी आएगी.
रूस साफ़ तौर पर अलगाववादियों की अनदेखी नहीं कर सकता.
मगर साथ ही लगता है कि रूसी राष्ट्रपति व्लादिमीर पुतिन को भी यह स्पष्ट नहीं है आख़िर इस खेल का अंत क्या होगा.
